January 2008 holiday in South of Spain

Just a few snaps of our brief trip to Valencia. The introductory picture is of excursion boats on the Albufera where we had a lovely paella for Sunday lunch.

  •   Sierra de Guadarrama.

The mountains near Madrid may not be the most exciting in the world, but they are close by and beautiful under the right weather conditions. Here we started at the Puerto de Fuenfria and walked up the Cerro Ventoso to see these splendid views.

  • The Move from Whitstable to Alcobendas

Having been here for a while, we decided that we would speed up the process of emigration from England that we had planned. So Jill gave in her notice at work and we put our house in Whitstable up for sale. This series of pictures illustrates our move to Alcobendas. We chose European removals to transport our furniture and things. Meanwhile we took the Mazda on the Plymouth to Santander ferry and drove to Madrid.

Just when life seemed to be getting quite routine, along came an apple cart and upset it all. About a year ago, my "role" was made "redundant" and I was forced to look at other options for keeping body and soul together. I decided that I had had enough of being an employee and wanted to take a bit more control over my working life. To this end, I formed the company Zenit and began to look for contracts. My first contract was in Alcobendas near Madrid, working for another global pharmaceutical company. It was quite an adventure starting out, but soon I had rented a flat and was beginning to make a new life for myself. This series of pictures, taken on a misty sunday morning, shows where I am living. These were taken to give my family and friends an idea and maybe to encourage them to visit and see for themselves.

La Palma is one of the islands of the Canaries in the Atlantic. We spent Christmas there in 2002. Staying on the west coast, at Puerto Naos, we witnessed the results of a storm in the form of giant (to us) waves, and on two occasions, saw the legendary 'green flash' where the last glimmer of light from the setting sun turns green if the air is clear enough. Our walks took us outside and inside the Caldeira de Taburiente, a giant crater partly formed by volcanic activity and partly by a landslide and erosion. We also walked on the volcanos of the South, where the most recent eruption was in 1971. One drive to the North had to be cut short because although the distances on the island are not large, the time required to traverse them is long. Here was beautiful scenery, but we have no photos to show from this part. As on other Canary islands, the flowers are spectacular.
