Simple content management system

Content management systems are designed to allow anyone to manage their web site easily. CityDesk is one type of content management system where you do all the work on your local PC, and when ready, you copy the local site to your public site. CMSimple is a content management system where you edit your files in place on the public site. There are many systems for editing files remotely and the Wiki Type Framework  is just one example. What makes CMSimple unique is that the whole web site is held in just one html file. This means that you can create the file locally and FTP it to the web server, and then edit it on the web site as need dictates.

My first thought when I heared about the concept was that the system could not possibly create a large web site. The author, however, claims that files up to 2MB can be managed successfully, which means about 2000 pages of A4 text. That is quite a lot of text! I suspect that the system would begin to be awkward with more than 200 web pages, but not many sites can claim even this number,

The html file is structured very simply so that it can be created with any html editor. The <h1>, <h2> and <h3> tags all signal the start of a new virtual page, while the <h4> tags mark headings in each page. Almost any html can be included inside the <p> tags. Editing of pages remotely is facilitated by a WYSIWYG editor that makes the creation of links to other internal pages and images very simple. The editor allows the html code of the page to be edited and Images can be uploaded via the FTP client built into the software. Naturally, the appearance of the whole site is easily changed by editing the template. Security is not bullet proof yet,but the author is working on it.

CMSimple is a beautiful idea, very well executed and could be extremely useful for personal or small commercial sites.
